What Is An Electronic Fuel Injection System?
An Electronic Fuel
Injection System is the general term given to a system of
fuel delivery using an electronic device (ECU, ECM, ECC, ECCS, etc) to
determine the amount of fuel and the ignition timing required by the
engine at every point in time, and under every different engine
condition.
The fuel is delivered via fuel injectors (solenoids that are electrically operated and turn the fuel flow on and off to each cylinder). The fuel injectors are pulsed by the ECU for very short times - in the range of milliseconds for each pulse.
An Electronic Fuel Injection System is the normal current system used by all motor vehicle manufacturers and most aftermarket performance fuel systems are programmable Electronic Fuel Injection Systems.
The main thing that you want to make sure of, is that you have an ECU that will do the job you require, and that your injectors are correctly sized (not too big, and not too small) for your application.
When it comes to choosing an ECU for your Electronic Fuel Injection System, don't just think about what you might want your engine to do today. Think a little into the future and into any features or functions that you may want your ECU to control. It will save you a lot of money in the long run.
Some modern aftermarket ECU's can now control shift-lights, automatic transmissions, climate control systems, and more.

NOTE: Choosing an electronic fuel injection system to suit your application is critical. If you have a vehicle that is used for daily driving, with AirCon, and other niceties, you should the functionality of the systems you are concidering, to ensure they have the required tuneability and functionality you require.
Don't get cought up in seeing a drag car run a sub 10 second pass, and think that you need the type of engine setup and fuel injection system that car was running. Your daily driver needs a refined tune to be able to drive smoothly and responsively at all times and under all driving conditions.
